Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, is a dental condition identified by inflammation and infection in the gums. When left unchecked, it can result in a number of severe oral health concerns, such as gum tissue recession, tooth loss and bone loss.Periodontal disease originates with harmful bacteria that accumulates in the mouth and is found in dental plaque. These bacteria are responsible for the initial inflammation of the gums, which will eventually begin to pull away from the teeth. There are multiple stages to gum disease, and the symptoms will vary depending on the severity of your case.The first stage can manifest as swollen, red or tender gums that bleed easily.
As the disease progresses and the gums pull away from the teeth, teeth can become loose, and many patients experience pain while chewing and persistent bad breath.
